Reason For Learning

What are earrings made from? What is the best material for body piercings? Do you like Gold, and if so do you prefer yellow, pink or white? Do you like Silver, titanium or stainless steel? Metals have different properties, so it is important to choose the right metal for the intended purpose. All metals, however ,have a similar lattice and bonding structure that determines their properties and uses.

Learning Intention

In completing this bite you will examine metallic bonding as the strong bonding with in metals like Sodium and Iron. You will understand the relationship between the structure and bonding of metals and their properties. Students will also learn that modification of metals by processes such as alloying and heat treatment can be very useful.
