Unit 1 - Isotopes and electron configuration

Reason For Learning

Students need to become familiar with the use of the mass spectrometer in identifying isotopes of elements. They will also be able to recall some of the historical development of the model of the atom, in particular the theories of Democritus, John Dalton and those scientists who contributed to the discovery of the sub atomic particles, the nucleus and isotopes.

Learning Intention

At the end of this learning bite students will be able to write the electronic configuration of the first 30 elements. They will be able to recall the structure of the atom and understand the relationship of isotopes to the subatomic particles. They will also be able to apply a formula to calculate the relative atomic masses of elements.
