YOUR TASK:

  • On completion of this unit the student should be able to investigate and communicate a substantiated response to a question related to an issue in genetics and/or reproductive science.

  • Spend time investigating your options and brainstorming. DEVELOP A BIG QUESTION FOR INVESTIGATION - this should not be a yes/no question! It should be able to be broken up into smaller, bite size questions that can be tackled.

  • You have choice over your research area of interest - see examples below.

  • Regardless of your mode of presentation, you should include relevant diagrams/images - preferably ones you have made yourself, or adapted to suit your needs.

  • Maximum 1000 words!

  • You MUST have a reference section showing where you obtained your information from.

Timeline

Week 3: Developing a research question and planning

Week 4: Writing time - draft due in lesson 2

Week 5: Finalising piece

End of Week 6: Task due

Investigation of an issue ideas:

  • How is a specific genetic disease (state example) inherited and what are the consequences and treatments for this genetic disorder?
  • What is the chromosomal abnormality that gives rise to a specific syndrome (state example) and what are the consequences for the individual?
  • What is the difference between reproductive cloning and therapeutic cloning and what are the ethical issues associated with it?
  • What are the main techniques used in assisted reproductive technology (ART) in humans and what are the ethical issues associated with such techniques?
  • How do genetic factors impact on complex human behaviours such as aggression?
  • How does genetic testing of embryos and foetuses offer hope to individuals wishing to have children and what are the ethical implications for such testing?
  • How might the sequencing of the human genome impact on our lives, our medical decisions and society?

Choosing a format
How will you present your work?
What structure is appropriate for this? News article vs multimedia? Documentary?

Consider...

Introduction

  • Broad background knowledge regarding your chosen topic.
  • Consider the 'what' aspect of your question, eg. 'What is a GMO? What is Huntington's?'

Body

  • Logically sequencing your small questions, and using evidence collected to answer these.

Conclusion

  • Taking into account your answers to your small questions - can you answer the 'big question'? Any directions or predictions for the future?
