What is an issue?

An issue is a topic that people are currently talking and writing about.  It is usually controversial - people have strong arguments for or against the topic.

Where can we read and hear about issues?

We can read about issues in newspapers (letters to the editor, editorials, cartoons, etc.) and websites, on social media such as Twitter, blogs and Facebook and we can hear about them on TV news programs and radio (especially talkback radio). Issues are also the subject of opinion pieces, essays, speeches, personal letters, diaries and dialogues.

Who is involved in issues?

Different issues have different stakeholders.  Some issues effect the whole community and some just effect a smaller group of people.  Government at Federal, State and Local levels can all be involved in issues.

Who writes and talks about issues?

Anyone who is a stakeholder can write or talk and express their opinion about issues.  For example, they can write a letter to the editor or they can call talkback radio to give their point of view.
