Read the article 'The Self-Hater' and consider/answer the following questions:

  1. Why might we reject ourselves or hide our true identities from others?
  2. Identity is more than just sexual orientation. What else contributes to our individuality?
  3. How can standing out harm/benefit you?
  4. What would you be willing to sacrifice in order to fit in? And for how long?
  5. Sometimes we strive to be different from those we are most similar to. Can you suggest a reason for this?
  6. What circumstances affect how you portray yourself to others? (eg environment, society, etc)

Key Ideas:

  • We are constantly redefining the boundaries of who we are – identity is fluid and changes with time and circumstance, but also with our self-confidence and the level of comfort we feel in our own skin.
  • We reject those we’re similar to in an effort to make ourselves feel superior, which is strange after spending so long trying to be welcomed into a group.
  • Self-loathing is a natural stage on the road to accepting yourself and feeling comfortable.
  • Our act of putting on a new face/hiding our true selves can be negatively viewed, even though they are really acts of self-preservation.
  • What we see as defining characteristics of our personality (eg sexuality) says as much about us as the groups we aspire to join or and reject…??

Do you agree/disagree with these statements? Discuss.
