Maths in Sport

Reason For Learning

Australians are famous - or infamous - for being sports-mad. We play it, we watch in, and we love it. When people play sport, there needs to be some way of accurately comparing performances: whether on a tennis court or a sprint track, measures are needed to separate the winners from the losers, to sort the quickest to the slowest and to identify the champions of an era. Measurement is an essential element of all sports in two ways. First, measurements are taken to determine the outcome of an event, such as which runner was the fastest or which shot-putter threw the furthest. Second, measurements are used to communicate agreed rules and regulations of a particular sport.
