Reason For Learning

An understanding of the concept of health is essential to gain an appreciation of the overall levels of well being experienced in Australia. Knowledge of the methods used to measure health status is also important if accurate judgments are to be made about the level of health of Australians.

Learning Intention

• definitions of physical, social and mental dimensions of health and health status; • different measures of health status of Australians, including the meaning of burden of disease, health adjusted life expectancy and DALYs, life expectancy, under-five mortality rate, mortality, morbidity, incidence, prevalence; • health status of Australians compared with other developed countries, including Sweden, United States of America, United Kingdom and Japan;
