Reason For Learning

Organic compounds are a class of chemical compounds which occur naturally. They comprise over 90% of all known chemicals. Hydrocarbons made of only Hydrogen and Carbon are amongst the simplest and yet the most useful organic compounds. Hydrocarbons are found in crude oil, and processing the oil yields many useful products.

Learning Intention

After completing this learning bite you will be able to; Name the molecular and empirical formulae of the homologous series of Alkanes & Alkenes up to Hexane. Know the difference between saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons. Know what an isomer is and be able to name the isomers of propane and butane. Name systematically the compounds containing functional groups such as alcohols.
